Betting Actions in Poker and Going All In

What makes the game of poker unique are its betting rules. Usually, other than the first forced bet, players put money into the pot completely voluntarily.

During a betting round, a player can check, open, call, fold, or raise. Checking is when the first bet has not yet been made, and the player on the current turn opts not to put any amount of money into the poker pot yet. Because it is the first bet in a betting round, checking does not necessarily mean that they are out of the game. Rather, when a player checks, it is considered that they have made a bet of zero.

A player opens a betting round when they are the first to put money into the pot for that round. All subsequent players must then call the bet in order to remain in the game. This means that they must put into the pot, an amount that is either equal to, or more than, the amount that the previous player had put in.

If a player puts in an amount greater than what the previous player had placed, this is called raising. When a player raises a bet, they are essentially changing the betting amount, and all other players are subsequently required to put an equal amount of money into the pot. If a player feels that they do not want to make any further bets, and previous bets have already been made for that round, they can opt to fold. When a player folds, they are essentially discarding their hand. They are no longer required to place any amount of money in the pot, however, they also give up any chances of winning that pot.

Folding often happens when players feel that they no longer have any chances of winning the pot. It can also happen when they do not have enough resources to make further bets. If the betting amount for a particular round is more than what the player has on hand, they can also opt to go all in. This is an alternative option to take if a player wishes to continue to play but does not have a sufficient stake anymore. When a player declares that they are going all in, they bet whatever is left of their stake, and continue to hold on to their cards for the rest of that hand. They do not have to make any further bets at that point, but if they win, they will not get the entire pot. Rather, the amount that they will win from any player will be the amount of the bet that they had last made.
